There are many different varieties of ants found all over the world and according to scientists, there are almost 12,000 different species of ants seen in various parts of the world. Sizeable varieties of them can be also found at home too.
The types de fourmis can be decided based on number of factors. It can be because of their appearance, size and habits etc. They can also be found in various colours. Some of these ants can bite or sting too. Following are few common varieties of ants.
- Acrobat ants (Crematogaster)
They are about 2.5 to 3 mm long having two nodes. Colour can be either black, red black, brown to yellow brown. They mostly remain outside, inside the damaged woods and can be aggressive too. They do not invade indoor much and can be found in eastern USA.
- Argentine ants (Linepithema humile)
They are of 2.2 to 2.8 mm long and having a single node. Their colour can be light to dark brown. They can be found both indoors and outdoors. They do not have the ability to sting and have a musty smell. They are generally found in southeastern USA, Hawaii or California.
- Asian needle ant (Pachycondyla chinensis)
These ants are of 5mm long and have single node. Their colour can be brown-black with little orange mandibles. Generally, they net in moist area outside. They are less aggressive but if they sting then it can be painful. Commonly found in north and South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.
- Carpenter ants (Camponotus)
Average lengths of these ants are between 6 to 13 mm and can be found in the USA. They do not eat wood but generally nest in the wood outside. They become aggressive if they are either attacked or their nest id damaged.
- Crazy ant (Paratrechina longicornis)
They are of 2.2 to 3 mm long with single node with black-brown colour. They can be found in USA particularly in Gulf coast.
- Dark rover ants (Brachymyrmex patagonicus)
Their average length is 1.6 mm with single node with medium to dark brown colour can be found in number in places in the USA.
- European fire ant (Myrmica rubra)
They are of 4 to 5 mm in length and having two nodes and mostly are of light reddish-brown colour. They can be aggressive and may sting if they are disturbed. They can be seen in USA and Canada.
- Field ant (Formica)
They are 4 to 8 mm in length having one node and can be seen in different colours. Mostly found in Midwest and Northeast USA.
